Human Crafted Foundation Human creativity

The knowledge
within the work.

A line drawn, a scene directed, a phrase rewritten: each involves choices informed by experience.

01

Knowledge takes different forms

A performer adjusts timing in response to another person. A writer hears where a sentence fails. An animator gives weight to a movement. A craftsperson understands how a material will respond.

These capacities develop through attention and practice. They include what can be explained and what must be learned through doing.

02

Judgement shapes expression

Creative agency involves conceiving, interpreting, selecting, revising and determining the form of a work.

The relationship between these decisions and their execution varies across disciplines. A framework describing animation may require different evidence from one describing a performance, a building or a musical composition.

03

Tools are part of the account

Human creation has long involved instruments, machines and digital systems. The use of technology alone does not explain who contributed what.

A useful account identifies how tools were used, where creative decisions were made and who took responsibility for them.

Cultural sustainability A living inheritance

Culture is not only
what we preserve.
It is also what we still
know how to create.

Creative practices remain alive because people learn, practise, teach and transform them. An archive can retain an artwork; the knowledge that made it possible needs people and opportunities for use.

Human Crafted understands cultural sustainability as a society’s capacity to carry this knowledge forward as its tools change.
